Our History

Southern Power was established in 2001 to support Southern Company’s expansion into the wholesale energy market. By 2009, the company operated eight natural gas facilities totaling 7,880 megawatts (MW) across four states. Since then, Southern Power has strategically grown its portfolio to include more than 13,150 MW of generating capacity across 55 facilities in 15 states. This growth has been driven by the acquisition and development of clean energy solutions, including solar, wind, and energy storage technologies, reinforcing Southern Power’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.
