Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer
Bob Schaffeld serves as senior vice president and chief development officer for Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company. Southern Power is among the largest wholesale energy providers in the United States, meeting the electricity needs of commercial and industrial customers, municipalities, electric cooperatives, and investor-owned utilities. Schaffeld is responsible for the company's growth through origination, acquisitions, project development, and construction across all US wholesale power markets. The commercial team is focused on delivering clean energy projects powered by wind, solar, storage, gas, as well as other customer solutions that ensure the growth sustainability Southern Power expects. Under Schaffeld’s leadership, Southern Power has added over 3GW of clean new power generation across America.
Schaffeld has served in diverse roles over his 30+ year career. Key jobs have included chief commercial officer, vice president of electric transmission, general manager of engineering design, and director of natural gas services. Before he joined Southern Company, Schaffeld managed environmental and engineering services for Duke Energy North America for new wholesale power generation project development nationwide.
Schaffeld holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Auburn University, a master's degree in environmental engineering from the University of Alabama, and master's degrees in both environmental management and business administration from Samford University.
Schaffeld currently serves on the Auburn University Samuel Ginn College of Engineering Alumni Council and on the Industry Advisory Board for the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering department.
Bob and his wife live in Birmingham, Alabama and they have four grown children.
