Head of Origination, Commercial & Industrial
Daniel is responsible for strategic origination for consumer and industrial customers throughout North America. This includes long term power purchase agreements, co-locating new generation at customer facilities for front of the meter applications and cross coordination on the full suite of Southern Company product offerings with PowerSecure, Sequent and Pivotal Liquified Natural Gas.
Currently, Daniel supports customers nationally across the United States, but the majority of deals he focuses on are concentrated in ERCOT, SPP, MISO and PJM markets. His role requires a lot of travel to meet with customers and significant time internally to understand each component of Southern Power’s metrics.
“Electricity is the most complex commodity that is continually changing with new technological achievements and efficiencies. A focal point of origination is understanding the customer’s needs and creating a product offering that will fit the metrics within Southern Power. Origination at its core is being an internal generalist and an external specialist. Origination is conceiving an idea to create value and then promoting it internally. Right now, the energy industry is full of change, and it’s great to have the opportunity to build relationships with people in this industry. In my job, I’m constantly working to know our customers and search for new opportunities to market our developments.”
Before joining Southern Power’s business development team, Daniel Managed the portfolio of renewable energy credits and carbon deals in PJM, Alberta, Il Ares, National Green-e for Acciona Energy International Power Originator.
Daniel graduated with a Bachelor of Science in management with a concentration in finance and energy specialization from Tulane University. He also served as the student body president for A.B. Freeman School of Business.
Since joining Southern Power in April 2017, Daniel worked on the execution of the Royal Caribbean power purchase agreement on the Reading Wind Facility, Southern Power’s 200-megawatt wind facility in Osage and Lyon Counties, Kansas. This was a unique, first-of-its-kind transaction, where Southern Power tailored an offtake structure around Verified Carbon Standard’s carbon offsets to achieve Royal Caribbean’s objectives of reducing scope one emissions.
“For me, the dynamic and complex nature of energy markets is the most interesting aspect of the energy industry. Politics, weather, new load and the physical transmission systems all play a critical role in this market. Working together with external customers and internal teams to accomplish goals is the most rewarding part of this job. Each deal that is done creates jobs and new infrastructure that will be operating for 30 or more years.
A native of Houston, Daniel recently purchased land in Bastrop, Texas, where he has been prepping for the Spring 2020 planting season for Arbequina olive trees. Once the olive trees are mature, he will be milling and pressing his own olive oil.
